The odd couple

Here’s a question for you…

What do a 42-year-old Texan and a 24-year-old Spaniard have in common?

The answer is they paired up to win the Zurich Classic of New Orleans last weekend - the PGA Tour's only team event.

Ryan Palmer and Jon Rahm stormed to a three-shot victory at TPC Louisiana in the Crescent State, scooping just over $1 million each in the process. Once the duo had found the top of the leaderboard after the second hole on Sunday, they never relinquished the lead on their way to a comfortable three-shot victory.

Palmer admitted he was surprised when Rahm accepted his offer to pair up, but both will no doubt be glad he did after Palmer claimed his fourth PGA Tour win and Rahm his third.

Molinari highlights slow play

Once again, the debate on slow play reared its ugly head over the weekend. Edoardo Molinari tweeted a list of timings after playing a five-and-a-half-hour round at the European Tour’s Trophee Hassan II event, making it clear he wasn't happy.

Northern Irishman Graeme McDowell was quick to dismiss Molinari’s clear frustration, saying he is ‘flogging a dead horse’, claiming players can’t get around any quicker. But what do you think?

Should the pros be leading by example in the hope that play quickens up at club level? Or should Molinari stop worrying about everyone else and focus on his own game?

Grip check

Take a look at your grips, you may feel they are ok but if you compare them to a new grip you will be surprised at the difference. Even though they may not look worn, grips get worn and a bit shiny over time, the consequence is that you start gripping the club harder which leads to poor shots and higher scores.

What's your routine?

Prior to any round of golf, it's important to warm up correctly to avoid injury and enable you to be at your peak ready for your opening tee slot. So, what do you do? We thought it wise to look at one or two ways you can help get yourself off to the best possible start.

Dynamic stretching
Next time you have a spare moment, Google Miguel Angel Jimenez’s warm-up routine prior to a round. The 55-year-old has the suppleness of someone half his age despite his clear love of fine wine and expensive cigars. The 21-time European Tour winner has perfected a dynamic stretch routine, which involves constant movement through each stretch action.

A few shots to loosen up
Nothing quite gets the eye in than hitting the ball. Start off with your wedge before moving up your bag to a few mid irons before getting the big gun out. Make sure you try to replicate your opening tee shot with the last few practice shots.

Chipping and putting
You play more shots with the putter than any other club so it makes complete sense to sink a few putts prior to your tee time. Not only will it help to boost your confidence, but hitting some longer putts will give you a sense of speed for that day.
