Next year is set to see another major change in the golfing landscape as the new World Handicap System comes into play from November. So, we decided to take a closer look at how it will be calculated and what it will mean for you going forward – we’ll try not to get too heavy.

Is it too early?

I know summer isn't long behind us, but it's now October and there's a distinct autumnal feel in the weather. All this means that we are on a countdown towards - you guessed it - Christmas. Now, we might not yet have heard a christmas song on the radio as yet, but we have our Christmas raffle up and running in-store with tickets costing £1 or £5 for a strip. Get into the festive spirit early!

Save the date - 01/11/20

2019 has been quite the year for golf and 2020 promises to be no different as we welcome the new World Handicap System (WHS) to the UK.

How will it impact you?

The nuts and bolts say that the best eight scores from your previous 20 rounds will form the basis of your handicap, whilst your scores from the previous 12 months will play a role to prevent wild fluctuations in handicap.

Interestingly, abnormal course and weather conditions will also be taken into account after each round.

It all sounds a little complicated but we'll keep you updated with the latest information and what it means for you as we draw closer to its introduction in November 2020.

Birdie-fest

"You know, I’m sort of sick of coming back over to the European Tour and shooting 15-under par and finishing 30th"

Rory McIlroy held nothing back in his assessment of the current challenges (or rather lack of) that European Tour venues provide in his most recent interview.

It came shortly after shooting 15-under-par across Carnoustie, Kingsbarns and the Old Course to end in a tie for 26th at the Alfred Dunhill Links (won by Frenchman Victor Perez).

Adapt your game for winter

Just because the weather has turned chillier and course conditions are beginning to get trickier, it doesn’t mean you need to hibernate your clubs for the winter. In fact, quite the opposite, as a couple of simple adaptations to the way you play will ensure you continue to get the most out of your game.

Putting

The putting surface is finely cut throughout summer and although our greenkeepers continue to do an excellent job in winter, the grass tends to remain slightly longer in the colder months thus requiring a bit more oomph to get the ball to the hole.

Clothing

The latest golf-specific clothing retains heat whilst remaining incredibly lightweight so you have complete freedom of movement on the course. So, leave the baggy jacket at home and make sure you have some of the latest golf attire in the bag.

Change your ball?

Maybe it’s time to go for a golf ball that prioritises distance in the winter? We all know that the ball doesn’t travel or roll as far in the wetter months, so pop in to see us next time you are at the club and we can guide you through the best options available.

Ready, set...

We do not have enough fingers and toes to count the number of times slow play has been highlighted on Tour this year. However, one such solution to speed up the game is ready golf, but what exactly is it?

Ready golf dictates that players should play when they are ready to do so rather than adhering to the ‘farthest from the hole plays first’ rule.

For example, if you’re ready to play whilst your playing partner – who is further away from the hole than you – is still assessing their shot, ask if you can go first before executing your shot.

It's important to note that whilst ready golf is encouraged, it is not an actual Rule of Golf so needs to be agreed with your playing partners first.
